At the center of the enchanting rolling hills, lived a boy named Shepherd. His being was pure, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was essentially to look after his flock of ewes.
Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the breezes across the lone tree on the hilltop were his only companions. Day in day, watching over his wards inculcated in him a notion of calm satisfaction.
Yet, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for companionship. In one such instance from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous scheme.
Narratives of wolves prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One afternoon he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills to offer assistance but discovered no beast.
The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This trick continued for a couple of more days. Yet, one morning, a real wolf actually charge at the herd. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his read more flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is difficult to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was in the past.
